We're still experimenting with handling the fussy evening time, but what really baffles me is naps closer to bedtime. I've read conflicting stuff about not letting baby nap too late in the afternoon to catnaps + cluster feeding to a "normal" nap from, say, 5-7PM followed by bedtime stuff like bath, book, etc.
DS is not on any sort of official schedule, but I'm struggling with some awkwardness in the evenings where he doesn't want to sleep despite being tired, and someone has to handle him for a couple of hours until "bedtime" after he wakes up from his afternoon nap around 4ish. We get him changed, swaddled, fed, and he USUALLY is ready to pass out sometime between 7 and 8.
I'm curious how everyone else (especially BTDT moms) have handled this!

We currently have no routine at all for DS2. He'll be one month on Tuesday and I think that's when I'll start attempting to piece together some semblance of a routine. Right now he's sleeping in his swing.
I can't really remember when DS1 fell into a routine, maybe around 2 months? But he was kind of a unicorn baby when it comes to sleep.
What I had with him though was feed, lotion, and pjs then laid him down. I think we did this around 6:30-7pm for a while. He still goes down now at 7:30 and he's basically 2.

Up at 5/5:30a for the day. I need to push this to 6/6:30a because he's a mess by 6:30. Nap #1 at 7:30ish
Up at 9:30a, back down for a nap at 11a. He'll sleep until 1p most days. He then needs another nap by 3p but won't conk until 4p most days (major case of FOMO). He wakes up at 6p.
7p begins bed time. He gets a bath, swaddled, and then fed while rocking. He will conk by 8p most nights. DS1 goes to bed at 7:30p so H comes and rocks DS2 while I put DS1 down. I then relieve H and finish rocking DS2 until he's fully conked out. He'll sleep (usually) until 12/1am, take a bottle, and go right back to sleep. He'll wake again at 3:30/4a for the same thing

OK, so it sounds like folks aren't avoiding late afternoon naps. DS likes to fight them, but even a short nap would help quell the beast. I found some sample "schedules" (I think of them more as guides)... I might try offering some cluster feeds to see if that helps him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

gimmesugar nope. 3 naps a day here. DS1 needed a third nap until 8ish months. They say that with your first, you adjust your schedule for them, but with your second, you adjust their schedule to yours. Most newborns and younger infants will need a snooze shortly before bed otherwise they're an overtired mess by bedtime. Overtired usually equals shittier sleep

Plus, I'm sitting her wondering how on earth I'll also get dinner on the table at a reasonable time :/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

DD naps three times a day and the last nap usually happens between 4 and 5 and she'll nap until 6:30/7. Depending what time she wakes up determines if she's a sleep for the night by 8 or 8:30.

I prefer he wake that way then jolting him awake. The max we can go between waking from that last nap and bedtime is an hour. I woke him at 7p tonight and we're already 10 minutes into bedtime rocking, 40 minutes after I stopped the swing. Hell conk sometime in the next 30-40 minutes

DS still naps when he wants but has started to get on more of a schedule at night. He tends to have a bottle at 7pm, falls asleep around 8:30, awake for a bottle at 11, sleeps until 4, wakes for a bottle and then asleep until 8am. He is still falling asleep on me 8:30 but we're going to work on that. We were actually able to get him to sleep out of the RNP last night for the first time. He slept in his crib from 8:30-11, then we put him in the bassinet in our room after his bottle. We're hoping to move his bedtime up to 7:30 in the next few weeks, which should be easier to do when I go back to work and he has to wake up earlier. My parents will be watching him and they'll probably get him on a nap schedule.

Lol to "cluster feeding" at 6 and 8 only. Mine cluster feeds from 6 to 9 or 930 and eats at least 4-5 times in there.
We're so not on a schedule yet. At night we're getting there but during the day I let her sleep whenever. Maybe after she hits 1 mo next week I'll give it a try. Hoping to eventually push her to nap during DS's nap, but since I can wear her and have her nap that way for now I'm like, whatever.

irish14 Lol! I thought that was funny too. We had some luck last night when I offered him a feed when he was fussing but not necessarily indicating he was hungry. He "snacked" and passed out for a short nap, which seemed to keep him in a good enough mood for his bath followed by a "real" meal and bedtime. I might continue to try doing that. Definitely do not GAF about him falling asleep at the breast at this point if it gets us through. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

sleepymonkey Glad he was able to sleep outside of the RNP! DS will sometimes fall asleep on me then wake up a bit when I put him down...sometimes he goes to sleep after that without issue and other times he's like...WTF. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

irish14, we had 3 week cluster feeds and they were no fun. Luckily it didn't last long. We have a day "schedule" that closely resembles the 6 week one posted above. Baby girl sleeps a lot, and goes down quickly. We fed at 6:15 tonight, and she was out by 7. Baby boy was out a little before 8. We'll wake them/dreamfeed at 9:30/10, and they'll sleep until 2 or 3. Then they'll be ready for their next feed 3-4 hours later. I'm hoping to get them waking at 6 eventually. We're finally moving upstairs this week and we're hitting a wonder week so I expect things to go a little sideways.

No schedule here and I don't keep track of anything so who knows maybe there's a pattern. We put her in a sleeper/swaddle and feed her to sleep. She usually is out anywhere from 8:30-9 for her first good stretch of sleep. I probably won't try to put her on a schedule for awhile but that's just my style.
