Noob alert. What is BLW? Is this like a BLT? Baby led weaning. Giving baby Whole Foods that they can then pick up and fed themselves. Essentially weaning themselves onto solids. You steam the foods or cook them so they are soft enough to gum. But not purees or spoon feeding by a parent.

Noob alert. What is BLW? Is this like a BLT? BLW is baby led weaning. Basically you don't do cereals or purees, and just give kiddo chunks of real food (like half a strawberry or a strip of meat) to gnaw on and explore on their own. There's a book called, wait for it, Baby-Led Weaning, that explains a lot and that I really liked. We had a lot of success with DS1 with BLW and I'm very glad I never sat at the table spoon feeding him. We let him use his hands until he expressed an interest in eating with silverware, and now at 2.5 years he handles a fork and a spoon like a pro.

Cereal is not really a thing here, I guess? We usually start with fruit and then vegetable / grain purees. That's what I did with DD starting at 6 months. I might do a mix of purees and BLW this time around.

Not sure what my plan is. I'm conflicted between waiting the recommended 6 months or starting earlier. I guess I will watch for signs from him and go from there.

loves2shop4shoes - Baby Led Weaning pivot I was afraid too but neither of my girls ever choked to the point of needing intervention. Apparently they are less likely to choke because they are in control and can judge better for themselves. I will admit though DD1 used to chipmunk her food in her cheeks and we'd have to take her plate from her until she finished what was in her mouth for fear of her choking. Strangely, the fear inducing choke of her life was on a tiny square of plastic film like from the outside of a new DVD.

We did a combo of blw and homemade purees (mostly for daycare) with DD starting at 6m. We also did cereal mixed with bm starting a week or so before that.
We'll do the same with B.
Part of me wants to adhere to the 6months because of the open/closed gut stuff, but really I'm just lazy and don't want another thing to add to my day/prep schedule. Plus extra laundry...

littleredfish That makes sense as to them being in control. Good thing 6 months is 3 months away & I have time to think it over 😬

Wow I'm surprised how many are doing BLW. I literally know nothing about it. The pedi recommended cereal to me at 2 months for Rs reflux and I've been holding off. I feel like she's ready to eat! She's such a big girl and I feel like always hungry. Now you guys have me second guessing...

I have a friend who introduced food at 4 months and it gave her kiddo horrible gas pains, so she stopped and waited a few more weeks. It can be a trial and error process, I think.

I was so ready for DS1 to start solids because I thought he would sleep better and not nurse as much, but that wasn't what happened. He didn't really start eating them til closer to 5.5 months and once he did, he would eat anything. Steam strips of zucchini and squash were his favorite, and chunks of butternut squash too. He feeds himself really well now and is really good at telling us if he's hungry or full.
I gave him puffs and yumyums so there was something I could send with him to Daycare. So he would quit stealing them from other kids.

My pedi recommended cereal for both my girls too. Higher in iron I guess? I tried it for a bit but it was a hassle to feed her, she didn't really like it. We tried adding fruit, no dice. She got really bad gas and didn't sleep any better than she did before (even worse on the days we gave it to her at supper time). We stopped giving it to her and took a break and then I heard about BLW and tried that instead and I found it way easier and none of the same issues. I liked that I didn't have to feed her separately from us which tool up my time, I could just toss our food on her tray and let her go. I just continued to BF before all meals. So when it was DD2s turn I just kind of nodded my head at the recommendation but just did BLW for her too.

TTMA cereal for reflux. Does it help keep the spitting up to a minimum? DS is on reflux meds so they help with the pain associated with the spit up but he is still just constantly gurgling and spitting up. I feel bad for him.
ETA: I was going to skip the cereal all together this time but if it'll help with reflux...
